Raili Vaittinen -video

We had Tomi Hinkkanen make a video history of my father-in-law Raili. Raili turned 91 in August of this year, so he has a lot of life experience.

Raili has made two evacuation trips during the Winter and Continuation Wars. We have been fortunate to hear many stories about Raili's life in Karelia, evacuation trips and his family's settlement in Kurisjärvi. It would have been a real shame if Raili's stories and experiences had been forgotten.

Raili told things very vividly and things have been indelibly imprinted in his mind. We, the younger generation, have been amazed at how accurately Raili remembers details related to old events and things.

The video history gives a good picture of Raili's life and the things that have been close to his heart. Family has always been the most important thing for Raili, and the most important thing that emerges from the video history is gratitude and satisfaction with the life he has lived, even though Raili has had to experience evacuation trips.

Anneli Nordberg -video

Anneli Nordberg's family returned to their home in Muola parish in Karelia during the armistice. Her father repaired the house that had been damaged in the Winter War. The final departure came on June 16, 1944. Her father hid a vanari, or storm lantern, in a pile of firewood so that they would have light when they returned if the electricity had been cut off.

"It's still there in the pile of firewood, if it exists," Anneli thinks.

She describes the evacuation journey in astonishing detail, even though she was only four years old at the time.

"Tomi Hinkkanen is an experienced and talented journalist who has the skill of encouraging interviewees to tell their stories from their own perspective. The experiences of Karelian evacuees are valuable national history that should, while possible, be preserved for future generations."

Paul Graig -video

We interviewed Paul, who is originally from Scotland, in his current hometown of Los Angeles. He is the son of a working-class family with five children. His parents worked hard to improve their social situation.

During the war, they ran a guesthouse. There was a shortage of everything. Once, hotel guests were accidentally served cat food spread between sandwiches instead of tuna.

Paul talks about his strict Catholic upbringing at home, where his girlfriend was not accepted because she was not Catholic.

Under pressure from his mother, Paul applied to a maritime college and graduated as a ship's mechanic. This took him to the seas of the world for months. He met his future wife, with whom he had five children, one of whom was born in the back seat of a taxi!

Paul speaks openly and honestly about his divorce and the reasons that led to it.

A new career as an aircraft mechanic took him to America. He found new love in his old friend Carolyn, and they got married. Paul says he wants to be remembered as someone who overcame adversity in his life.

Paul is a deep, funny, and engaging person who proves that we all have a story that deserves to be told for generations to come.
